Playing With Lincoln Logs Is Fun
One of the most popular toys, since their invention in 1917, has been the Lincoln logs. Named after Abraham Lincoln, they were commonly found in households since first marketed. They are loved by children of all ages and encourage creativity, hand-eye coordination and patience. The loveable logs have little grooves that allow them to link together in order to build some great creations. They haven’t changed too much throughout the years except to become more durable and solid. The prices are typically very reasonable to buy a set of Lincoln logs and they can be found almost anywhere.
As a child, I remember going to my grandparent’s house. My grandmother had several sets of Lincoln logs and I’d dump them all out onto the floor and build an entire town. Once the town was built, I’d find the matchbox cars and with mixing the two together, could have hours and hours of entertainment. I was always sad to have to destroy the perfect towns that I’d built, but I always knew that I could create something even better the next time that I visited her house. My mother took a few photos of me with my Lincoln log towns during that time period of my life and I still cherish them. After my grandparents’ passed away and everyone was ridding their house of items, the only thing that I wanted was the sets of Lincoln logs. I knew that I could have chosen something of greater value and more importance but those Lincoln logs were the foundation of some of my happiest memories. I had to have them.
Those four sets of Lincoln logs are in my house. Two sets are stored in the attic and I will not ever allow people to touch them. They are my memories and I want to keep them as sacred as possible. However, the other two sets have been delighting my own son for almost a year now and he just can’t get enough of them. He has a playroom in which he destroys almost every day. I’ll let the villages survive a few days before I request that he tears them down. As long as the villages are out of the rest of the house and they aren’t harming anyone, I have no problem with seeing the joy that he gets from playing with the hand-me-down Lincoln logs. I know the memories that he’s creating will stick with him just like my memories did. I suppose that’s why Lincoln logs have always been and always will be popular.
