The Lasting Appeal Of The Russian Nesting Dolls

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

Kids love hidden things and places. After all, it is a time in life when they are exploring the world, trying to find out new things and discover what life is all about. Humans are biologically programmed to do this, and that is why things like mystery and adventure always entertain children. It is also why kids like nesting dolls so much.

As a toy seller myself, it is interesting to see what products get replaced by the newer and better toys, and which ones stay popular. When certain classic toys continue to sell year after year, it really says something about their lasting appeal. Such is the case with the Russian nesting doll. We have all seen nesting dolls one place or another. Sometimes, you find them in the collection of your grandmother. Other times, you find them in the toy chest of your five year old. Either way, they are a delight. Some of them have the same design on every doll, but the really interesting ones change subtly with each subsequent nesting. They will have different clothes or younger and younger faces. Sometimes, the central nesting doll – the one that doesn’t open up – has a completely different look than all the rest. Either way, it seems to say something kind of interesting with the progression of images.

Of course, recently nesting dolls have been updated. No longer are they designed to look like Russian peasants in traditional folk dress. Nowadays, almost any design will do. A popular look is to do nesting doll models based on the star players from sports teams. For some reason, sports fans seem to love them. Macho men who would never be seen playing with dolls normally will have nesting dolls in their collection alongside signed baseballs and cards. It is pretty amusing to see, and it is also a great boost to my sales. If I can carry nesting dolls of the more popular sports teams, I can bring in a whole new client base!

Recently, there has even been a trend of learning to make your own nesting dolls. Many people who aren’t normally skilled with crafts have found simplified ways to make these intricate and beautiful toys. A more popular solution, however, has been to buy blank nesting dolls already made. These come in the basic shape, and are often made of very high quality wood. You can buy them in either wood or plastic, and then get paints paint them up. You can use basically any design you want, and make them all your own. It can be a lot of fun to do, and can bring a family together as a shared activity.

My Sister Loves Her Porcelain Dolls

Sunday, August 10th, 2008

The point of this article about Porcelain Dolls is to help you to the next level and show you what this amazing subject has to offer.

When my sister in law passed away she left behind a huge collection of porcelain dolls. These were something she had collected over the short span of her life, and they will one day belong to my little girl. They are stored away at my dads house right now, but when she is older we will probably put up some shelves so that she can have them on display in her room. Shes too young now, and I know even up on a shelf they would not be safe. She would love them, but shes very rough. Most of them would be broken.

She just turned five, and someone in our family got her a few porcelain dolls to add to the collection. She loved them at first site, but I explained that they were breakable dolls, and she knew then and there not to touch it too much. A year before someone had given her a few small porcelain dolls, and she broke one of them. She was very sad about it for a long time, and I think she knows that she doesn’t want to break any more of them. That doesn’t mean I think shes ready to have them in her room yet though.

Though porcelain dolls come in all price ranges, I’m pretty sure the ones I have stored away for my daughter were not very expensive when they were first purchases. That doesn’t mean they aren’t worth something now, but that doesn’t even matter. These porcelain dolls are worth more than what they are made of. They are a reminder of someone we lost, and for that reason alone they are priceless to us as a family.

I hope that when my daughter is old enough to take care of the porcelain dolls on her own that she treats them well, and perhaps even saves them for her children, if she has any. For some reason many of the things I had as a child are gone. I had a few things I wanted to save but that was just not meant to be. I will be better about these porcelain dolls though, and I hope she will love them as much as my sister in law once did. Though material items could never replace what my little girl lost, but they are certainly something that can give her a glimpse into a life that ended way too soon.
